Julian Brandt would have been an excellent summer signing for Tottenham, but the talented midfielder is headed to Borussia Dortmund instead.

The summer transfer window has barely begun, but Tottenham have already missed out on a key target. Julian Brandt is the sort of player who could’ve filled Christian Eriksen‘s shoes for Spurs, but he’s elected to snub Mauricio Pochettino and company.

Instead, Goal reporter Ronan Murphy is reporting that Brandt has elected to take his talents to Borussia Dortmund next season. Tottenham are not the only club who will be disappointed to learn of Brandt’s decision. The 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star also had offers from PSG, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

His decision isn’t a critical blow to Tottenham’s summer transfer plans, but it does eliminate a really good prospect from the club’s shopping list. If Eriksen does elect to move to Real Madrid this summer, Spurs will need to purchase a true No. 10 to replace him in the squad. Brandt is a player with the requisite talent to take over for Eriksen, but he also was one of the more affordable targets on Pochettino’s potential transfer list.

The good news for Tottenham fans is that the club still have plenty of time to retain Eriksen or shift their attention to other transfer targets. Brandt was a prominent name on the club’s radar, but he wasn’t alone. Someone like Jack Grealish or even James Maddison could easily take Brandt’s place as the club’s prime target in the coming days and weeks.

It’s very likely that Spurs will wait until after their upcoming Champions League final encounter versus Liverpool to truly begin serious negotiations with other clubs. Pochettino wants to be intimately involved in the club’s summer transfer business, but obviously his focus is squarely on Jurgen Klopp’s squad at the moment. That policy might have cost Spurs the chance to swoop for Brandt, but it’s a sacrifice everyone at Tottenham is happy to make.

Next. Signing Ndombele would help Tottenham keep Pochettino. dark

In the end, Brandt will continue his career in the Bundesliga and Tottenham will shift their transfer attention elsewhere. He is Tottenham’s first miss of the summer, but he won’t be the club’s last.
