Winger Nicolas Pepe could leave Lille for Liverpool

One of Liverpool’s newest transfer targets seems to be winger Nicolas Pepe of Lille in Ligue 1.

According to Metro UK, the two clubs have already been in contact over 24 year-old Nicolas Pepe,

Liverpool have initiated contact with Lille over a move to sign winger Nicolas Pepe, according to reports. . . Lille have made no secret of the fact they’re willing to sell Pepe but they value the 24-year-old at around £80m.

Pepe was first garnering interest from English Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal, but due to their failure to qualify for the Champions League next season, they look like unlikely targets. With John Henry claiming to invest more money into the club this summer, this signing could definitely bolster Liverpool’s already deadly attack.

The move makes sense for both sides as well. The Ivory Coast international could get himself on the Champions League stage and make himself a household name within a year. On Liverpool’s end, they would finally have someone legitimate to put in on the front line when Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane or Mo Salah are injured or need a rest.

With past targets like Timo Werner looking to make a move to Bayern Munich and Nabil Fekir probably not coming back to be a part of another fiasco, Pepe might be the best option. While he is expensive, he is still very young and is already top-shelf quality, having bagged in 22 goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1.

This might be the sort of investment Liverpool has to make to compete with a loaded club like Manchester City. With a team like City, they have so much depth on the bench and Liverpool will need to same if they do want to win the Premier League. This could in turn, be the player Liverpool need to sign.
