Tottenham don’t just need to re-sign Danny Rose because he’s their best left back, they also need to lock him up because he’s their emotional leader.

There was a time when Danny Rose was the best left back in the Premier League. That’s no longer the case. Tottenham still need to sign the 28-year-old fullback to a new deal this summer.

Fortunately for Mauricio Pochettino and company, the English left back is very interested in continuing his career with Spurs. The Independent are reporting that Rose “would like to stay” at Tottenham if they offer him an extension on his current contract. He has two years remaining on the deal he signed early in Pochettino’s tenure, but ideally he’d like to get a little more financial security.

Tottenham already face an uncertain summer over the status of key players like Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld. The odds favour both members of Pochettino’s starting XI moving to greener pastures during the current transfer window. Spurs need to be very careful not to experience too much squad upheaval. Keeping a locker room leader like Rose could prove invaluable.

When you watch Rose play it’s clear that he gives everything he can to help his team win. He’s not a perfect player, but the sheer will he exerts on the pitch makes him well worth a spot in Pochettino’s squad on a regular basis. Barring the purchase of a new left back this summer, Rose should be in great position to relegate Ben Davies to the bench for most important fixtures next year.

Even if Rose’s skills start to decline a little due to age, he’s still an excellent insurance policy to have on the substitute’s bench. The fact that he was able to fill-in adequately in the midfield on several occasions this season just goes to show how versatile he can be. Having a live wire like Rose to bring on when the squad needs an emotional lift would be a boon to Pochettino.

It’s going to be a very busy summer in Tottenham, but one of the moves Daniel Levy should make is to secure Rose’s future at the club. It won’t be the biggest move Spurs can make in the coming weeks, but it could be crucial to the club’s continued ascension.
