Tottenham need to make quick work of selling Christian Eriksen. The talented Dane is holding up Spurs’ summer transfer plans.

Some Tottenham supporters may be harboring hope that Christian Eriksen will sign a new contract with Spurs, but the truth is even that wouldn’t stop speculation linking him with other clubs. It’s time for Daniel Levy to part with the talented Dane so Spurs can move ahead with finding his replacement.

The moment Eriksen went public with his desire to seek a “new challenge” it became a foregone conclusion that he’d be exiting North London this summer. Mauricio Pochettino is not the sort of manager who retains players that might not be 100% committed to his project.

From a purely financial stand point, it might make sense for Levy and the higher-ups at Hotspur Way to hold on to Eriksen for as long as possible. The idea behind that strategy would be to allow the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United to engage in a long, protracted bidding war for the talented No. 10. That might help the club’s bottom line slightly, but it would really disrupt Tottenham’s ability to reshape their team ahead of next season.

For one thing, whatever fee Eriksen ultimately commands on the transfer market is going to give Spurs a big financial boost. It’s been rumoured that Tottenham need to sell Eriksen before firmly making a bid on a big money replacement like Giovani Lo Celso or Bruno Fernandes. The club cannot afford to let other teams just ahead of them in transfer races like that just because they want to wring a few more million pounds from Eriksen’s sale.

It’s also important to proceed with jettisoning Eriksen in order for Pochettino’s squad to get mentally adjusted to the idea of playing without him in the middle of their attack. Like it or not, Eriksen has been a huge part of Tottenham’s efforts in the final third during his time with the club. Players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli need to have time to process the stress of his loss and, more importantly, to get excited at the prospect of playing with his replacement(s).

The simple truth here is that it’s in everyone’s best interest for Eriksen to find his new club as soon as possible. He’s made his choice to leave Tottenham and Spurs need to get on with life without him. That’s not what Pochettino and company wanted, but it’s the hand they’ve been dealt by the talented Dane.
