Douglas Costa

I was on the fence about including Douglas Costa on this list because there is still plenty of reason

More from Serie A

to believe that he could return to form next season with more regular playing time and without the early season distractions he brought upon himself last season. However, after taking a look back at his last season and considering the potential of Federico Bernardeschi, it just seemed right for Douglas Costa to be sold this summer. Juventus will be able to fetch a nice price for him in spite of last year’s issues. Hopefully that price would be high enough to keep Juve from making the mistake of selling Joao Cancelo.

Costa appears to be ready to leave Juventus after the disappointment of last season and there is no guarantee things would actually be any better for him this year under Maurizio Sarri. Bernardeschi appears to be better suited to Sarri’s style thanks to his positional flexibility. There is also a rumor out there that Hakim Ziyech has a ridiculously cheap buyout clause. If it is true then flipping Costa for Ziyech and making a profit on it would be an incredible move for Juve.

Costa could find new life with another top squad who isn’t trying to force a young star to play the wrong position. Even if he does manage to form elsewhere next season, it would be the right move for Juve to have let him go and reinforce the squad at a position that doesn’t already have a capable starter on the roster.
