According to The Standard UK, Lampard is Chelsea’s first choice as their new manager to replace Maurizio Sarri, who is heading back to Italy to take over at Juventus.

The blues are hoping to name the Chelsea legend as their new boss in the next few days as they search for a replacement for Maurizio Sarri. Lampard did a fantastic job with Derby County in the Championship this year, leading them to a sixth-place finish. He currently has two years left on his current deal and they continue to insist that Chelsea hasn’t even approached them about snatching their manager. Derby would insist on 4 million euros from Chelsea in compensation to release Lampard from his current contract.

Chelsea is looking at giving Lampard a three-year deal at Stamford Bridge, where he starred for many years himself as one of the best midfielders to ever play for the club. As noted by the Standard UK, Lampard has reportedly informed Derby about his desire to join his former club as their new manager if the opportunity presents itself.

Derby really wants to keep Lampard and are neglecting even looking for a possible replacement for the Englishmen. However, though, the chance to become the manager of his former club is very enticing for the 41-year old. The blues have also brought in Petr Cech in a technical director role, a former teammate of Lampard back in the glory days at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea wants to avoid a repeat of last year when Sarri took over for Antonio Conte after pre-season action already began. Despite that, Chelsea still ended up having a respectable season, winning the Europa League and finishing third in the Premier League, qualifying for Champions league for 2019/20.

If they can make Lampard their new coach in the next few days, he’ll have lots of time to get ready for the next campaign, with players who aren’t playing for their countries set to return in just a few weeks.

Chelsea still faces a transfer ban, meaning they won’t be able to sign any new players for the upcoming season. But that could possibly be a benefit for Lampard in his first year as the Chelsea boss, especially if he can guide them to a top-four finish with the current players they have. This would be just his second year as a manager which could be a bit concerning, but he did lead Derby County to a solid year considering it was his first coaching job. He is loved by everyone around Chelsea though, so even if they didn’t finish in the top four in his first season with the club, I don’t believe they would lose faith in him.

Lampard definitely looks like Chelsea’s number one option right now as their new manager and it’s looking more likely that it will become a reality in the next few days.
