As Fernando Torres calls it a career, we look back at some of the moments that defined his career.
At 35-years-old, Fernando Torres has decided to call it quits on his career. He announced his decision on social media where he added that he was going to hold a press conference to explain his decision.
His career spanned 18 years and even with its ups and downs, he contributed goals wherever he went.
He made his professional debut as a teenager with his boyhood club, Atletico Madrid, in 2001. While he got off to a slow start, the promise was there and was with the club when they got promoted to La Liga. He scored his first goal that same season and things continued to get better. At 19, he became club captain and stayed at Atletico Madrid until the 2006/07 season when Liverpool came calling.
He had interest from other Premier League sides but he wound up joining Liverpool. At Liverpool is where Torres really made a name for himself. Arguably, he enjoyed the best moments of his career at Anfield under Rafael Benitez. He would be at the club until January 2011 when he handed in a transfer request and was sold to Chelsea. It was a bit of a shock move and left a bad taste in the mouth of Liverpool fans.
However, his form would take a massive dip at Chelsea and was never able to reach the heights that he did at Liverpool. He made his return back to Atletico Madrid in the second half of 2015 after a very brief spell at AC Milan. He got a bit of a second win under Diego Simeone at Atletico but it was obvious his best years were behind him.
After his contract was not renewed at Atletico, he made the choice of joining Japanese-side, Sagan Tosu in 2018.
He’ll be remembered most of all for his time at Liverpool and Atletico Madrid but, bar AC Milan, he made an impact wherever he went. His career is full of memorable moments both at the club and international level.
We take a look at a few of his most memorable moments.
