Should Manchester City sign Harry Maguire, he will become the world’s most expensive defender. No, that’s not a typo…

Harry Maguire is every English football fan’s favourite defender. His antics at the Russian World Cup last summer won the hearts of many, with many wishing they had a head as beautiful as his. Granted, England’s fixtures were easy, but if anyone thought the fans wouldn’t overreact to Maguire’s header against Sweden, they were sadly mistaken.

However, times have changed since this summer. Not only is the weather dreary and wet in England this summer, but Harry Maguire’s name is relatively unheard of. That was until recent reports suggested he could break a record.

More from Manchester City

According to The Mirror, the Leicester City defender is set to become the world’s most expensive defender. Can anyone guess who the culprits are? That’s right, it’s Manchester City, who are willing to pay £80m for Maguire…

Manchester City splashing the cash in the transfer window is no surprise. They are one of the richest clubs in the world and you bet they’re going to utilise their riches well.

This summer was particularly important for Pep Guardiola and company. They are bidding farewell to a City legend and their captain, Vincent Kompany. Kompany’s era at the Etihad Stadium revolutionalised the club and not just from a leader’s perspective. He led by example, consistently being the best defender in the Premier League for many seasons.

His aerial ability goes without saying. There was rarely a header which comes into the City box which wasn’t gobbled up by the skipper. It also helped in the final third too, although against Leicester this wasn’t needed since he scored a contender for the goal of the season.

Perhaps this is why Manchester City think Harry Maguire is worthy of the tag ‘most expensive defender’. There aren’t many players out there that fit the mould of Vincent Kompany. In fact, Harry Maguire may be the only available and worthy option.

light. Conflicting view. Harry Maguire is not a good fit for Manchester City

That said, I think that Manchester City’s valuation of Harry Maguire is justified. He may not seem like a glamorous signing for the English champions, but just wait and see Pep’s thinking…
