Joao Mario

Joao Mario’s time at Inter Milan hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations that came along with his 40 million euro transfer. He hasn’t been particularly impressive and was even sent on a loan after his disappointing first season with the squad.

When he returned from that loan at West Ham he still wasn’t able to produce the types of performances you would expect from a player with that high of valuation and struggled to earn himself a regular spot in the starting lineup. Last season was no different with him only being able to secure 12 starts and 20 total appearances.

Now Inter is making him even more of an afterthought in their squad thanks to the massive spending spree they are planning this summer. With Nicolo Barella and Stefano Sensi reportedly on their way to Inter their midfield is starting to look pretty crowded. Even if Inter lets Borja Valero go back to Fiorentina for free as has been talked about, Joao Mario would still be one of 7 players competing for 3 midfield spots. That means somebody has to go.

The fact that Mario played the last minutes of the 5 returning midfielders makes him the most logical option to be sold. Inter potentially being able to get a decent return for him also makes him an appealing option for a sale.

There is no chance that they recoup everything they spent to bring him to Milan, but they could still get enough to make a helpful contribution to their 200 million euro spending spree. All they need to do is make some team believe that he’ll be able to fulfil the potential they saw 3 years ago if he gets a change of scenery this summer.

At this point, Joao Mario staying with has very little chance of benefitting either party in any way. Inter should let him go now before his value drops any further.
