Marko Rog

Marko Rog looked like a promising prospect when Napoli brought him in 3 years ago, but he hasn’t been able to make the transition from prospect to starter. In fact, he has almost never made it into Napoli’s starting lineup. In 3 and a half seasons at Napoli he has only started 7 matches, with 4 of those just coming last year.

He has made 49 appearances as a substitute during his time with the club and appeared regularly off the bench last season, but that wasn’t exactly what Napoli was hoping to end up with 4 years after the transfer. He didn’t exactly set the world on fire during his half-year loan at Sevilla and struggled to make it into the starting lineup there too.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for at Napoli now either. Amadou Diawara is younger and earned more starts last season than Rog has earned in his entire Napoli career. The midfield is also looking like it is going to get more crowded next season with Napoli trying to secure the transfer of James Rodriguez. With Rodriguez adding another midfielder who is guaranteed to start along with Allan and Fabian Ruiz and Piotr Zielinski fighting for the third spot it looks like it will be just about impossible for Rog to break into the starting lineup.

At just 23 years old, Rog will still attract plenty of other squads who still see the potential in him that Napoli saw 4 years ago. Napoli would be able to get a sum significant enough to help build up their transfer budget. It’s always tough giving up on a player that once showed such promise, but it is the right move for Napoli to try to compete with Juventus again next season.
