Isco

I recently saw a rumor that AC Milan was interested in Isco this summer and it made a lot of sense to me. Isco has rarely been one of Zinedine Zidane’s first choice players at Real Madrid over the last few years and now it looks like they are finally going to let him leave. There should be a ton of teams interested in bringing Isco in this summer and AC Milan absolutely belongs on that list.

Sure, it seems like right now might be the best time for Milan to make a flashy signing like this because of their agreement with UEFA that will keep them out of the Europa League this season. That shouldn’t disqualify Milan from making this move though. If some of their rumored moves become reality and they are willing to sacrifice Suso then this move shouldn’t cause an issues with FFP.

The midfield was the obvious weak point for AC Milan last season. Lucas Paqueta helped to solve some of their problems when he showed up in the middle of the season, but the midfield remains the team’s weakest area.

The return of Giacomo Bonaventura could help strengthen the midfield, but I find it difficult to put too much of my faith in a player who will be 30 by the time he returns from a nearly year-long absence due to knee surgery. His age could mean that this injury starts to slow him down earlier in his career than we would usually expect.

Instead of putting their faith in Bonaventura, Milan would be better served bringing in somebody they know they can trust to produce in the midfield. Isco would instantly become the best player on their squad (and arguably the best in all of Milan) and would be the type of marquee signing that would instantly announce their intention to compete for a top 4 spot next season.

They’ve made it clear by agreeing not to participate in the Europa League that their sole focus this season will be Serie A. Adding Isco to a midfield that already contains Paqueta and Franck Kessie might not be enough for them to overtake Juventus, Inter Milan, or Napoli, but it would certainly put them in contention for the 4th Champions League spot.
