Tottenham are preparing two massive contract offers
Tottenham have been very active on the transfer market lately, but Spurs are also working hard to keep Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld.
The purchases of Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke have Tottenham fans excited about the future of their club, but Spurs aren’t only concerned with transfers at the moment. Mauricio Pochettino also wants to secure the services of Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld for years to come.
For most of the summer, the expectation has been that both stars would be leaving North London before the start of next season. That’s an understandable conclusion given the fact that both players are heading into the last year of their contract with Spurs. The club have a long-standing history of selling players off before they’re permitted to leave for free.
However, The Gambling Times now suggests that club officials are preparing new contract offers for both players. Perhaps more importantly, Tottenham officials believe there is a “real chance” that both men will commit their immediate future to the club in the coming weeks.
Alderweireld does seem to be the more likely of the pair to stay. Despite his £25 million release clause there’s been no solid link between him and a move to another club this summer. The Belgian defender would be a bargain for almost any club in the world at that price. The fact that no European power has come forward for his services indicates that he’s very open to extending his stay with Spurs.
Keeping Eriksen might be a bit trickier. Early in the summer it was a foregone conclusion that he’d be heading to Real Madrid. Unfortunately for the Danish international, it doesn’t appear that Zinedine Zidane wants to spend big money to bring him to La Liga. That leaves Eriksen as a man without an obvious destination at the moment. Manchester United have been linked with a swoop for the stylish No. 10, but they don’t have Champions League football to offer next season.
Even so, it’s possible that Eriksen has burned too many bridges with Pochettino and club officials to return. His remarks about wanting a “new challenge” did not sit well with many people associated with Tottenham. He’ll need to make things right with Pochettino if he wants to remain a key part of his project with Spurs. His return to North London isn’t impossible, but it still seems improbable.
The good news for Tottenham fans is that their favourite club is starting to act like a European heavyweight. Even if that doesn’t result in Alderweireld and Eriksen signing new deals, it does mean that money will be spent to obtain quality replacements.
