Jurgen Klopp talks about speculation over his Liverpool contract
By Josh Ricker
Since the Champions League Final, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been unwilling to discuss the possibility of an extension at the club he just won major hardware with. Some pundits think he will take a hiatus in 2022, or leave managing for good.
Jurgen Klopp is easily in the conversation for best manager in the world along with the likes of Pep Guardiola of Manchester City, and of course Zinedine Zidane of Real Madrid. This gives Liverpool all the reason in the world to try to lock him down for as long as they can get him to sign for.
Klopp has changed the culture at the Merseyside club, and completely reversed their direction since he has been there. From his prospective and bargain transfer policy, to his electric antics on the sideline, he has been the perfect fit at Liverpool, and the team emulates him perfectly.
With that being said, most think he will spend the same amount of time at Liverpool as he did at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund; seven years. With all the speculation surrounding his contract, this is what the gaffer had to say on the subject recently according to The Mirror,
"‘I will not leave before the contract is ending. That is my side. That is why a contract is important,’ said Klopp. ‘The owners like what I do; I like what the owners are doing. I love the team, they are brilliant. Melwood is sensational. I’m looking forward to going to Kirkby [the new training ground] and all these things. There is always a step forward.’"
Liverpool fans will at least be a little bit excited by the managers positive comments towards the club, as it is clear he is still in awe of what they have accomplished. It seems as though there has not been any conflicts or disagreements with himself and the club’s brass, also pointing to a possible extension.
The former Mainz player is always reluctant to talk about contracts, whether it is his own or players, he does not like it. To him, it is just a piece of paper and he will get to it when he gets to it. Another sign of him staying is how he has set the club up for the future.
Much like he did at Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp has set the team up very young, and had built a team that will thrive in England and abroad for 5-6 years at the highest level. While the stresses of managing have got to him a little bit, do not expect “The Normal One” to leave ‘Pool in 2022. The project is just beginning.
