It’s safe to say that Philippe Coutinho will not be returning to Liverpool anytime soon…

Liverpool is busy in the transfer window in the hopes of keeping up with Manchester City next season. However, they need to be quicker about their business. They have yet to sign anyone of significance, only securing the young Sepp van den Berg from the Eredivisie.

Last week, there was a lot of speculation surrounding a potential re-signing of Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian is not having a good time at Barcelona and his agent is desperately on the lookout for a move away. However, according to ESPN, Jurgen Klopp is not hopeful of an Anfield reunion for Coutinho.

"“I like Phil (Coutinho), I think he’s a fantastic footballer and all that stuff, but it would be a big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big money signing and it’s not our year for that. It’s just not possible.” – Jurgen Klopp (via ESPN)"

Philippe Coutinho left Liverpool on bitter terms. He thought that he would leave the club and be greeted with a multitude of glory, particularly in the Champions League, however, he is yet to achieve such glory with Barcelona. What is even more ironic about this is that Liverpool overturned Barcelona on their quest to the Champions League trophy last season.

Admittedly, it is a shame to see Liverpool will not be spending big on Coutinho. Klopp of all people knows how special he is and how much he can truly bring to a team. He is a very creative and dynamic player who thrives with the ball at his feet in the final third. He is very spatially aware and has the ability to either play an incisive pass to his teammate in space or take on the shot himself.

Klopp is beginning to set his fundaments at Anfield. If anyone is to return Liverpool to their glory days, it’s the German manager. However, they cannot look ahead to the new season with any confidence unless they sign big. It’s all well and good claiming Liverpool are the complete squad, but so is Manchester City and they still spent big this summer with Rodri.

If Liverpool’s pre-season is anything to go by, then the least they need is a back-up goalkeeper. Simon Mignolet is not worthy of backing up Alisson Becker. They could also look into replacing Daniel Sturridge, who is now a free agent after not signing a new deal with Liverpool.

Who do you think Liverpool should sign this summer?
