Daniele de Rossi completes move to Boca Juniors after leaving Roma.
Playing at Roma was one of Daniele de Rossi’s dreams and he lived it for 18 years before saying goodbye last season. Another one of his dreams was to play in Argentina, specifically for Boca Juniors. He can now say he accomplished that dream as his move to Boca Juniors was made official.
Both the Boca Juniors and Roma social media accounts posted about De Rossi’s move with the former welcoming him to his new club and the latter wishing him all the best.
The 35-year-old arrives at the club after spending his entire career with Roma. When he left Roma, De Rossi said that he could not end his career without playing for Boca Juniors. He cited the atmosphere at their stadium, La Bombonera, as well as Diego Maradona who is a Boca legend.
According to The Guardian, Boca manager, Gustavo Alfaro, said, “He’ll add his experience and quality.”
In Argentina, the move is being applauded and seen as a very big deal for the club. Despite all the names that have played for that side, De Rossi will rank high on the list of notable players. Still, some are questioning the move.
At 35, De Rossi might not have much left in the tank and even though the Argentina first division is not as good as Serie A, it is still a physical league. Given the physicality and his status, it’s not a stretch to imagine opposition players going in hard on the Italian to “introduce” him to the league.
Nevertheless, his impact in Argentina is clear as he was mobbed by fans when he entered the airport. He is undoubtedly Boca’s signing of the season and the biggest name they’ve attracted in a while.
They hope that with his inclusion, they’ll not only win the league but make it back to the Copa Libertadores final, win it, and take some sting off the loss last season in which their bitter rival, River Plate, bested them in the final that took place in Madrid.
