Despite Manchester United being in hot pursuit of Leicester’s Maguire, Mirror reports that the Old Trafford club has identified an alternative in case they fail to bring the England international to the club. The report suggests that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are interested in signing SL Benfica’s Ruben Dias.
Ruben Dias has been good in defense for Benfica, recording an average of 1.4 tackles per game and making 0.9 interceptions per game last season and is touted to become one of the elite defenders in the game.
Dias has managed to break through into the Portuguese national squad after impressing at Benfica over the last two seasons and is considered one of the best young defenders in the world right now.
The 22-year-old has shown a lot of promise and has attracted interest from Manchester United, who even happened to submit a bid for him. However, United’s bid for Dias was rejected by Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira, per newspaper O Jogo.
The report does not specify the amount that the Red Devils bid for the young Portuguese but hints that it was somewhere close to the player’s release clause of €66 million. O Jogo also reports that, Benfica are in talks with Ruben Dias so as to increase his release clause to €88 million and with supposed interest from English clubs like Wolverhampton and Manchester United, the payer is holding out for a substantial hike in pay.
Will Manchester United shell out the money for Harry Maguire or make an improved bid on Ruben Dias to save up on some money?
