Signing Aaron Ramsey: B

Aaron Ramsey was the first Bosman signing Juventus made this summer and it instantly filled a need Juve had entering the summer. Since Paul Pogba departed left to play for Manchester United, Juventus has lacked an attacking presence in the midfield. Ramsey willgive them that player they need who can connect the midfield with the attack and provide some scoring of his own. Rodrigo Bentancur, Emre Can, and even Sami Khedira have all performed admirably in the role in the past, but it was absolutely not the right fit for any of them.

His most recent season at Arsenal saw him provide 6 goals and 7 assists in only 1800 minutes across all competitions and the season before he chipped in with 7 goals and 8 assists in his PremierLeague appearances in 1850 minutes.

However, one of the issues with this move is those minutes numbers. In each of those two seasons he played around 1200 minutes less than Blaise Matuidi and Miralem Panic did last season. That is due in part to his struggles to remain healthy throughout his career. This is the biggest drawback of the deal, as he can only make an impact for Juve if he is actually available for the matches.

The other downside to the deal is that calling it a “free transfer” is pretty disingenuous. While the transfer itself may have been free, Ramsey’s contract is pretty hefty. If he can stay healthy then he will absolutely be worth the money, but if he struggles with injuries again then this could be a move that Juventus regrets.
