Real Madrid don’t appear interested in signing Christian Eriksen this summer, but the Tottenham star wants to leave his future options open.

Tottenham want Christian Eriksen to sign a new deal that would keep him in North London throughout the prime of his career. Eriksen is satisfied with the wages Spurs are offering, but he’s unwilling to sign the deal because of his continued interest in playing for Real Madrid.

If Los Blancos wanted to sign the Danish maestro this summer it’s very likely Eriksen would already be in the Spanish capital. Instead, he continues to keep Tottenham in limbo regarding his immediate future. He only has one year left on his current contract with the Premier League club.

According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham officials have already offered Eriksen a new deal that would double his current wage packet. That isn’t the reason why he’s yet to put pen to paper. Instead, the player’s desire to insert a release clause for certain clubs is what is preventing the contract from being cemented.

The report doesn’t specifically name Real Madrid as one of those clubs, but it’s safe to assume the Spanish giants remain on the top of Eriksen’s list. His desire to play there has been an open secret for a better part of the last 12 months. Again, if Zinedine Zidane and company really wanted to bring him in this summer, it’s very likely he’d already reside in Madrid.

Tottenham officials are certainly ware of the possibility that Eriksen might leave this summer. The uncertainty surround him is a big reason why Spurs are expressing strong interest in both Giovani Lo Celso and Bruno Fernandes as the transfer window winds down. The prevailing wisdom insists that Spurs need to sign at least one of the attacking midfielders to become Eriksen’s heir apparent. If the talented Dane does leave, it’s possible Tottenham would splash the cash to bring both Lo Celso and Fernandes to England this season.

It remains a massive priority for Tottenham to clarify Eriksen’s status sooner, rather than later. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he’s holding up a fair amount of the club’s other transfer spending at the moment. Whether he stays or goes will greatly influence what Spurs do before the summer transfer window slams shut. It will be interesting to see if Spurs ultimately grant Eriksen the release clause concessions he is seeking.
