In one of the most eye-catching transfer rumors this summer, it appears that Mesut Ozil might be making a surprise departure to the United States. DC United is looking for a replacement to Wayne Rooney, and has their hearts set on the Arsenal midfielder.

After a six year stint with Arsenal, it looks as though Mesut Ozil could be on his way out the door, to a very surprising team. That team is DC United. It was reported yesterday that United’s star sensation Wayne Rooney would be leaving in January during the MLS off-season to become a player coach at Derby County.

DC wants to fill this hole, and they believe Ozil would be a perfect fit into their team, while also keeping that world class talent they had in Rooney. However, it would have to be a deal done either in advance now, or in January due to the MLS season structure.

ESPN FC have reported the following on the matter,

"D.C. United will hold talks this week with representatives of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC."

Even though he has been heavily criticized at Arsenal by the fans, especially on the famous Arsenal Fan TV, he would glimmer in the MLS. You can look at older players like Rooney, or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, or even David Villa and they had marvelous careers in America. The crazy part of this whole story is that the German midfielder is only 30 years old, and is still in the back-end of his prime.

The former Real Madrid talent has over 350 caps in the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga, scoring 64 goals and assisting on 147. Staggering numbers for a player that has been the black sheep of a banter team for the past few years.

Nevertheless, if DC United could pull off the move, it would be a great transaction for all parties. Arsenal would get a sum of cash for a player that has struggled to fit into their team year over year, Ozil would get to be a star in a league with little pressure, and DC would get a star to fill their seats and improve the team. American fans would be in for a treat as well, getting to see another European star grace their AstroTurf.
