New Additions

It’s no secret that there were some major deficiencies in Juve’s squad last year, but they took major steps to fix those problems this summer. Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Ramsey, and Adrien Rabiot were all big acquisitions for Juve who should all fit into the starting lineup and they added Merih Demiral for some insurance at center back.

De Ligt was the most coveted defensive player in the world this summer and when Juventus landed him they quickly fixed their biggest problem from last year. They were a team that played a very conservative defensive style, but couldn’t depend on any of their center backs other than Giorgio Chiellini.

Now with de Ligt playing alongside Chiellini they have one of the league’s best center back pairings. Replacing Leonardo Bonucci with one of the world’s best center backs will make the defense much less vulnerable, especially now that this season’s attack-heavy style will leave Juve open to more counterattacks than they’ve had to deal with in recent year.

Ramsey and Rabiot should slide right into the starting lineup at the expense of Blaise Matuidi, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Emre Can. Rabiot represents a like-for-like switch with Matuidi who will provide some defensive stability in the midfield, but with better passing ability and more to offer going forward.

Ramsey’s introduction to the starting lineup will give Juventus something they haven’t had since Paul Pogba left, a midfielder who can connect the attack and midfield. Over the last few years they have tried to fit Sami Khedira into that role and he performed admirably for a couple of years, but he was never quite the right fit for the role.

Then he was replaced by a combination of Can and Bentancur last season, but either of those players would likely have been a better fit for Matuidi’s spot in the starting lineup. Now Ramsey will provide Juve with a new dimension to their attack that should make him a key piece of the transition to Sarriball.
