Depth

Juve’s incredible run in Serie A obviously has a lot to do with the big names they have available every season, but an argument can absolutely be made that the thing that separates them from the rest of Italy’s top teams is their depth.

This wasn’t so much the case last year, as they dominated against the top of the league just as much as the rest of the league, but in most years we see the top teams in the league struggle to beat each other on the road and it comes down to who get the most points against the rest of the league.

More from Serie A

Juventus has never had a problem picking up those points while most of their competition has dropped matches they were supposed to win during their title chase. This is due in part to the fact that Juve has been the deepest team in the league for years now. That remains the case this season.

You could even argue that this is deepest Juve squad we have seen in recent memory. Juve has made it clear that they still want to sell some players, but even if they were to sell Blaise Matuidi, Mario Mandzukic, and Daniele Rugani in the next couple of weeks while also sending Luca Pellegrini out on loan their backup options would still be incredible.

Even under those circumstances, Juve’s bench would consist of Gonzalo Higuain, Rodrigo Bentancur, Emre Can, Mattia De Sciglio, Merih Demiral, Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado, Federico Bernardeschi, and Gianluigi Buffon. That would make for quite the lineup when Juventus needs to rotate out their starters to keep them rested for the Champions League.

While most teams will struggle to get wins against mid-table teams when they need to rotate, that list of players at Juventus would be picked to win against more than half of Serie A. This will be especially important this season with the other top teams in the league also strengthening their starting lineups.

There isn’t much of a gap between Juve’s projected starting lineup and those at Inter Milan and Napoli. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if these teams all just took turns beating each other at home. That means this season’s Scudetto winner could very well come down to who does the best against the rest of the league. Juventus is set up perfectly to be the team that takes advantage of the rest of the league.
