Christian Eriksen may still be dreaming of a move to Real Madrid, but Tottenham haven’t given up on the idea of signing their talented Dane to a new deal.
Tottenham have enjoyed a very productive summer transfer window to date, but Daniel Levy and company still have business to conduct. Namely, Spurs are trying desperately to convince Christian Eriksen to commit his long-term future to the club.
According to The Independent, Tottenham officials are going to take one more shot at inking the Danish maestro to a new deal before the European transfer window slams shut. If they’re unsuccessful, Spurs may be forced to reluctantly sell Eriksen. The club does not want to see him walk away for free next summer when his current contract expires.
The challenge for Mauricio Pochettino’s club is that nothing has really changed with Eriksen since their efforts to sign him to a new deal in the summer. Spurs got off to a nice start with three points against Aston Villa, but that’s not going to do anything to change Eriksen’s thinking. He still appears to be enamored with the idea of taking his talents to Spain.
He’d certainly accept a move to Real Madrid but Zinedine Zidane doesn’t seem interested in his services. Diego Simeone and Atletico expressed some cursory interest in Eriksen early in the summer, but no formal bid ever materialized. It’s possible things could change for Eriksen next summer, but there’s no guarantee his market will be any more robust then.
The most likely compromise to the situation between Tottenham and Eriksen would be the insertion of a release clause that would allow him to bolt for Real Madrid at a relatively modest transfer fee. If that truly is his dream club, he might be pacified by such a concession from Spurs. That wouldn’t represent a great outcome for Levy and the higher-ups at the club, but it would protect them from all other potential suitors for their Danish star.
In the end, this might be Tottenham’s last chance to get Eriksen to sign a new deal. Spurs fans should keep a close eye on talks between the two parties over the next week to ten days. Eriksen’s football future is hanging in the balance.
