Tottenham’s attack has gotten stuck in the mud at times this season, but the return of Heung-Min Son to the lineup will be huge for Spurs.
Mauricio Pochettino’s attack hasn’t gotten into high gear yet this season, but there’s a clear reason why. Heung-Min Son’s absence from the pitch has been a huge issue for Spurs. Unfortunately for Newcastle, the South Korean sensation should be back in Pochettino’s starting XI this weekend.
As Football London points out, Son isn’t one of several Tottenham players who have suffered from injury to start the campaign. Instead, he missed the matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City due to the red card he picked up towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign. It was a senseless challenge from Son and it’s cost him the chance to contribute early this season for his club.
Fortunately, Tottenham have managed to take four valuable points from their opening two matches without Son. That’s a very solid return considering the fact that Spurs have already gone to the Etihad to take on City. Even with Son, it would have been very difficult for Pochettino’s club to earn all three points in that fixture.
Now Pochettino and his staff can turn their attention to Sunday’s fixture against Newcastle. The Magpies no longer have Rafa Benitez at the helm and his absence has been sorely felt on the young season. Newcastle are still looking for their first point of the young season.
Son will very likely return to Pochettino’s starting XI for Sunday’s match. That’s exceedingly bad news for a Newcastle squad that would desperately like to spring an upset against Spurs. Son’s pace and skill in wide areas make him a danger to score at any time. His presence on the pitch also makes it impossible for opposing defenders to focus in on Harry Kane. The combination of Son and Kane on the same pitch will be a welcome sight for Tottenham fans looking for an offensive explosion from their favourite club.
It will still be a few more weeks before Pochettino gets all of his injured stars back in the squad, but Son’s return should be more than enough to give Tottenham three more points on Sunday. Look for the fresh-faced Korean to really enjoy his return to Premier League football against Newcastle’s beleaguered side.
