6. Lazio

The most impressive part of Lazio’s summer was that they somehow continued to hold onto Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. They also managed to keep the rest of the squad that managed an 8th place finish and a spot in the Europa League thanks to their win in the Coppa Italia final. The only signing they made this summer that will make any difference this year was Denis Vavro, but I think it’s a player they already own who will push them back into the top 6. Ciro Immobile is one of the league’s best strikers, but only scored 15 goals this year. That won’t happen again next year. Talented players like Immobile and SMS are enough to believe Lazio belongs in the top 6 right now, but they’ll have to go out and prove they deserve it to keep this spot after failing to live up expectations last year.

5. AC Milan

AC Milan disappointed their fans once again last season, but it looks like they’ll finally be able to put the sins of their past behind them this year. They have been building a very talented young core over the last couple of years and that continued this summer. Those young players should continue improving throughout this season and this summer’s additions will help strengthen their weak areas from last season, especially their shallow midfield. Bringing in Marco Giampaolo as their new manager should also help Milan make a run at a Champions League spot this year. They’ll have to prove they’re worthy of this spot this year and if they want to pass Atalanta they’ll need to impress, but they’ll be able to pull it off this year.

4. Atalanta

Atalanta finished 3rd last year and held onto most of their squad over the summer, which is good enough to hold a top 4 spot to start this year’s power rankings. There is absolutely no doubting the talent this squad possesses and they will continue to be a formidable threat, but I think we’ll see them drop a bit on this list once they start having to balance Serie A and the Champions League. Luckily for them, they have a pretty friendly schedule to start the year, so they should be able to hold this spot down to start the year, but if they stumble in the early part of the season then it could quickly knock them down this list. I don’t think they’ll be the team that finishes here, but for now the burden is on somebody behind them to show they can take this spot off of them.
