Tottenham fans should keep a close eye on the players being sold at the moment. The club are clearing room for a busy January transfer window.
The English transfer window may have already slam shut, but Tottenham are still doing a lot of important business. The players Mauricio Pochettino and company are able to offload over the next several weeks will have serious implications on what the club can do when January rolls around.
According to Football London, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou is the most recent Tottenham player to leave the club. He’s headed to Besikstas in a move that should net Spurs somewhere between £4 and £5 million pounds. The transfer fee is nice, but the real value of the transaction for Pochettino is to free up crucial space in his squad. Chopping the French winger’s wages off the books will also give the club a bit more financial breathing room moving forward.
It’s very unlikely that Tottenham will stop with the sale of N’Koudou. Both Victor-Wanyama?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-” onclick=”sr_record_analytics_event(‘newsfeed_click’,”, sr_record_directory(),’sr_tracker’);”>Victor Wanyama and Serge Aurier are also being strongly linked with a late move to another European club. Wanyama was once an integral part of Pochettino’s plans before injuries robbed him of his ability to move around the midfield. Aurier came to Spurs with high expectations, but his failure to capture the right back position as his own makes him somewhat surplus to requirements.
No matter where Aurier and Wanyama go, it’s important to see how their potential departures will impact Tottenham moving forward. Simply put, it will leave Pochettino with space in the squad and money to spend on foreign players when January rolls around.
The idea of adding a high-impact player in the winter window isn’t entirely foreign to the Argentine gaffer. He purchased Lucas Moura from PSG in January. The Brazilian didn’t really hit the ground running, but he’s growing to be a more and more trusted member of Tottenham’s squad.
It’s quite possible that Spurs could set their sights on an even more ambitious target this winter. The North London club were linked strongly with several high-priced players just before the summer window slammed shut. It’s possible Tottenham could return for the likes of Paulo Dybala or Bruno Fernandes in January if they still look short of attacking firepower.
It’s impossible to know exactly who Spurs will target when the transfer window opens again, but the sales the club make over the coming days will tell us a lot about the club’s potential ambition in the winter. Seemingly modest sales now could lead to a massive purchase in just a few months.
