Juventus player ratings vs Parma: Giorgio Chiellini delivers win in opener
By John Vaccaro
Juventus continued their winning ways in their season opener against Parma.
It wasn’t the most decisive scoreline, but Juve dominated the match and were clearly beginning to play much more excitingly than we have seen from them in the last few years.
They started creating opportunities quickly in this match, with Cristiano Ronaldo getting a chance at a header early on from a Sami Khedira cross and then a shot from a sharp angle off of a pass from Gonzalo Higuain. He unfortunately couldn’t finish either, but Giorgio Chiellini wouldn’t waste his chance. Juve took a corner that was cleared by Parma, but not far enough to keep Alex Sandro from taking a shot at goal. That shot was redirected by Leonardo Bonucci into the path of Chiellini, who toe poked it into the net.
Juve nearly had another goal in the first half when Douglas Costa played a perfect ball to Cristiano Ronaldo who put it into the far corner. Unfortunately, when VAR got a look at the goal, Ronaldo was offside by the tiniest of margins.
That was it for the first half and Juventus didn’t manage to create another chance with as much danger in the second half. They held onto the lead throughout the second half and now get to head home after winning their season opener 1-0.
GK: Wojciech Szczesny 7/10
Wojciech Szczesny was as reliable as ever on Saturday. He made a couple of decent saves over the course of the match an didn’t make any mistakes with his distribution. The tough thing for Szczesny is his performances are always limited by the fact that Juve doesn’t give him much to do.
He got everything right that he was asked to do in this match. It just wasn’t really all that much.
