CM: Blaise Matuidi 6/10

I think this match proved my thinking that Blaise Matuidi really isn’t a great fit in Juve’s new style of play. He was just about non-existent in the attacking half, completing only 24 passes and not attempting a single shot. Even on the defensive end he wasn’t as impactful as we’ve grown used to. Miralem Pjanic was the dominant defensive player in the midfield in this match. Matuidi was able to make a little bit of a contribution on defense, but I think his usefulness may have run its course at Juventus.

CM: Miralem Pjanic 8.5/10

Miralem Pjanic was absolutely fantastic on Saturday. This was definitely not the guy we saw all of last season. Pjanic completed 37 more passes than anybody else in this match and with 91.3% accuracy. He was a huge reason why the attack was so dangerous in this match. More impressively, he was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end. I was shocked to find out he only officially made 5 tackles.

Pjanic was the best player in this match. It should give fans high hopes for him bouncing back from last year’s disappointments.

CM: Sami Khedira 6.5/10

Sami Khedira was surprisingly competent in this match. I know that doesn’t sound like a compliment, but when it comes to Khedira, that’s about as lofty as the praise gets. He almost helped Juventus opening the scoring in this match. He lobbed a beautiful ball into the box for Cristiano Ronaldo, but Ronaldo couldn’t finish the header. After that, he was pretty much nonexistent in this match outside of the bad foul he committed to earn his yellow card.

He wasn’t as bad as I expected in this match, but I really hope this is the last time I have to write about Khedira as a starter.
