Tottenham should have given Christian Eriksen a raise before now, but he is wronging Spurs by keeping them in the dark about his future plans.

Both Tottenham and Christian Eriksen deserve their fair share of blame regarding the deteriorating relationship between the two sides. However, it’s the Danish midfielder who needs to adjust his behavior the most at the current moment in time.

According to The Guardian, Spurs officials are “in the dark” regarding Eriksen’s immediate future with the club. Neither he or his representatives will actively discuss a new contract with Daniel Levy and company at the moment. Instead, the Danish midfielder still appears to have his set on a dream move to Spain.

It is quite clear that Eriksen is trying to have his cake and eat it too. In a perfect world, he’d secure a move to Real Madrid this week and waltz right into Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI. Unfortunately, the La Liga giants don’t appear to be overly interested in making a big money move for Eriksen. It’s quite possible they’ll launch a last-minute swoop for him at the deadline, but he’s not been anything resembling a priority for Los Blancos this summer.

Tottenham, in sharp contrast, have made numerous attempts to engage Eriksen in talks about a new deal. Weeks ago there even seemed to be meaningful momentum in those talks. The sticking point was Eriksen’s insistence that a release clause be inserted into the deal that would allow a select few clubs to buy him for a very reasonable transfer fee.

Simply put, Eriksen needs to be more forthright with Tottenham about his intentions. Cutting off all lines of communication with Levy and other higher-ups at the club is a childish negotiating tactic. It’s the rough equivalent of Eriksen taking his ball and going home.

If he doesn’t want to commit his future to Tottenham, so be it. Spurs officials could use that knowledge to make a serious attempt to sell him to the highest bidder. As it stands, it’s clear that officials at Hotspur Way don’t have any clue what to do with their Danish star.

The only certainty now is that Eriksen’s status with the club needs to be clarified as soon as possible. Mauricio Pochettino and his staff either need to reintegrate him into the starting XI or make plans for life without him. Eriksen keeping the club in limbo is only hampering Tottenham’s ability to enjoy a successful 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
