It’s time for Kieran Trippier to turn the page on his time at Tottenham. The Atletico Madrid fullback spends too much time talking about Spurs.

The more Kieran Trippier says about his time at Tottenham the worse he manages to make himself look. It’s time for him to focus on his job at Atletico Madrid and shut his mouth about his past at Spurs.

The English right back continued to drone on and on about his time with the North London Club with his comments to The Express yesterday. Specifically, he criticized Spurs’ officials for not letting him know that he was going to be sold last season. The right back singled out Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy as two men who could have been more forthcoming with information.

Perhaps someone should remind Trippier that it is Diego Simeone, not Pochettino who is currently his manager. Every minute he spends reflecting on his time at Tottenham is a moment he can’t focus on his current task in Spain. It’s in everyone’s best interest for Trippier to turn the page and stop talking about what he did or didn’t like during his time with Tottenham.

His recent comments make him look particularly naive. Tottenham officials were never going to tell him that he was set to leave the club in the midst of an important Champions League campaign. Pochettino, Levy and other officials at the club were left with an ugly choice. They could either avoid Trippier or lie to him about his long-term future at Spurs. They certainly weren’t going to openly tell him that he was due to be sold in the summer while they needed him to try to play adequate football at right back.

The simple truth is that Trippier wasn’t very good last season. He only managed to stay in Pochettino’s starting XI due to the hope that he could reclaim his form from the previous season. In retrospect, it’s very possible Spurs officials would pull the plug on his time in the starting lineup sooner than they actually did.

Trippier is rather fortunate that Atletico saw fit to offer him an attractive escape route. Their tactics are ideally suited to cover up his weaknesses and accentuate his strengths. Their midfielders give more support to their fullbacks than anyone else in Europe. That allows Trippier to run forward and focus his energy on pinging crosses into the box.

That’s why it’s time for Trippier to stop sounding like a jilted lover. It’s time for him to stop talking about Tottenham. Most Spurs fans have already forgotten about him.
