Danny Rose is emphatic that Mauricio Pochettino still has faith in him, but the truth is the left back is on borrowed time at Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino knows that Danny Rose brings an emotional edge to any match that really benefits Tottenham. That doesn’t mean the English left back will hold on to his starting left back spot at Spurs much longer.

For what it’s worth, Rose claims that his manager “fully believes in him.” His recent quotes in The Mirror make it plain that he’s not unhappy with his current place at Spurs. A slight injury to Ben Davies has allowed Rose to start all four Premier League matches for Tottenham on the young season.

The 29-year-old defender shouldn’t allow his recent run of starts to go to his head. The harsh truth is that his days at Spurs are numbered. There’s a reason Daniel Levy sanctioned the purchase of Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham on Deadline Day. Not only is Sessegnon a bright, young English talent, he’s also the potential heir to Rose’s throne at the left back position.

The more applicable question for Rose and his club to answer is just how much time he still has left with in Pochettino’s squad. It’s very possible he could be headed out the door via a transfer in January. That’s far from a certainty, but it’s also far from impossible. If Davies and Sessegnon both seize hold of regular playing time at left back in the next month or so it will quickly make Rose surplus to requirements.

On the other hand, it’s also very possible that Rose will remain the club’s first choice at the position for another season or two. He’ll never be the most skilled player in the final third, but the sheer will he displays on the pitch rubs off on his teammates every time he takes the pitch.

As long as he continues to be a solid defender, he’ll continue to have value to Pochettino and his coaching staff. Spurs fans should keep a very close eye on Rose’s play on that end of the pitch. Even the slightest amount of slippage could see him sold to the highest bidder when the next transfer window swings open.

In short, Tottenham supporters need to enjoy Rose while he’s still at the club. He certainly isn’t a part of Pochettino’s long-term plans. Just how long he can keep his place at Spurs depends entirely on his defensive play.
