Juventus player ratings vs Fiorentina: Absolutely disastrous debut for Sarri
By John Vaccaro
LB: Alex Sandro 6/10
Alex Sandro played fine against Fiorentina, but it would have been nice to see more out of him. With Danilo unfortunately offering nothing in attack on the opposite wing, Sandro should have taken a more advanced position to try to at least give Juve options at left. He didn’t make any mistakes on the defensive end, but Juve really needed him to be a difference maker on the left side and he unfortunately just wasn’t. He’ll need to have a bigger impact on the coming matches as Juve will need to lean on players like Sandro while their squad struggles get to full strength.
CB: Leonardo Bonucci 6/10
Surprisingly, on a day where Juventus gave fans plenty to complain about, Leonardo Bonucci gave me nothing to complain about. He played fine on the defensive end and wasn’t directly responsible for any of Juve’s passing blunders or Fiorentina’s best chances. Hopefully he continues to play this competently because there will be a ton of pressure on the Juve defense on Wednesday.
CB: Matthijs de Ligt 6/10
If there was anything positive to be taken from this match it was that Matthijs de Ligt at least looked more comfortable playing center back for Juventus. There was one momentary lapse when his awful pass to Szczesny nearly gave Fiorentina an easy scoring opportunity, but the rest of the match was a pretty solid showing from de Ligt. It was certainly a major improvement over his awful second half against Napoli. Hopefully this match was the start of an upward trajectory for de Ligt as he continues to familiarize himself with a new country and new teammates.
RB: Danilo 5/10
Danilo was the 3rd Juventus player to leave the match with an injury when he was subbed off for Juan Cuadrado in the 62nd minute. In the little over an hour he was on the field all he really managed to accomplish was to make me miss Joao Cancelo more than I already did. He provided very little to the attack and made Franck Ribery look like he had found the fountain of youth on the other end. Without Danilo, Juventus will now be especially thin at fullback and will have to start Juan Cuadrado until Danilo recovers.
