Can Real Madrid really afford to move on?

While it’s still early days in the 2019-20 season, a hefty portion of Real Madrid fans are sure of one thing. They want Zinedine Zidane gone and they want him gone now.

While this opinion does obviously divide opinion, the Real Madrid board would have been considering their options after watching their side be humiliated by Paris Sant-Germain.

According to Sport, should they wish to fire Zinedine Zidane, then they would need to cough up the funds. The Spanish outlet reports a fee of around £70m.

This money could be used to bring in a top-class player in the January transfer window. However, they did this in the summer and have received none of the benefits.

Real Madrid sit in third place of La Liga. While this is by no means disastrous, fans would be hoping to be in the top spot after four matches. Still, at least their slow start has been masked by Barcelona’s even slower start.

So, where has it all gone wrong for Zinedine Zidane? He was with Madrid for a whole transfer window and he had the entire pre-season to prepare his side for the season. Perhaps there was a deeper, embedded problem within the mentality of his players after he left last summer.

There will be many sides out there that would pounce at the chance of Zidane managing them. Depending on who Real Madrid would choose to replace him, it could even be a direct swap. For example, Tottenham may need to convince Zidane should Mauricio Pochettino part ways for Real Madrid.

It remains to be seen whether or not the board are in any desperate need to sack Zidane, or whether they are being patient to give him a chance to prove himself this season. However, it was revealed earlier in the week that they were “prioritising” Jurgen Klopp from Liverpool. Therefore, paying a huge fee of £70m would be worthwhile.
