Tammy Abraham’s breathtaking form proves that he is the number nine that Chelsea need

The 21-year old has been on fire in the Premier League, bagging seven goals in just five league appearances.

To begin the season, there were some doubts if Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham would be the primary striker for Frank Lampard‘s Chelsea side. Just after a handful of matches, it’s pretty clear that Abraham is the main man up front now. A lot of pundits had their doubts that Abraham could score goals at a high rate in the Premier League as he did last season with Aston Villa in the Championship, scoring 26 goals in 40 appearances. Well so far, he’s off to a fine start.

The youngster scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Wolves last weekend, tying Sergio Aguero for most goals in the Premier League. The previous two matches before that, in a tie with Sheffield United and a nail biting victory over Norwich City, Abraham netted a double in both of those fixtures. So to put that into perspective, he’s basically scored seven goals in his last three Premier League appearances. One could say he scored four of those seven tallies against relatively weak teams in Sheffield United and Norwich City, but then you look at what the Canaries did last weekend, beating Manchester City, and your point is irrelevant. Regardless of the opponents, Abraham has been clinical in front of net in every way possible.

Scoring goals of different varieties

His three goals against Wolves are a perfect example of his ability to score all different types of goals. The first one by Abraham required him to stay very composed. Mount got fouled inside the box, losing the ball, but a Wolves defender accidentally kicked it right to Abraham in front of the net. With two defenders running at him, Abraham shielded the ball perfectly, turned, and finished. His second goal was the first tally this season he scored with his head, finding space in the box and connecting perfectly with a Marcos Alonso cross from the left flank. Then his third one to secure the hat-trick was a goal of pure class. He received a ball at the top of the box, taking on Wolves defender Conor Coady, outmuscling and beating him with pure skill on the right, then perfectly placing a low hit into the bottom left corner.

Last season, Although Abraham scored 26 goals, none of them came from outside of the 18-yard box. Already this year, he’s scored a goal from long-range; a beautiful hit from the top of the box against Norwich.

Abraham has a wonderful first touch and is very good at holding the ball up, a necessary asset for a top-notch central striker. He’s the full package and his early form is proving that Frank Lampard made the correct decision selecting the 21-year old as his primary number nine.

Championship strikers making their mark in England’s top-tier

Abraham who played for Aston Villa last year and Teemu Pukki of Norwich City, both played in the Championship last season and were amongst the leading goal-scorers in the league, with Pukki winning the player of the year in 2018/19 for the newly promoted Canaries. They always say that there is a substantial difference in the quality of play between England’s second and first tier. There definitely is there’s no question, but these two players are proving they can score at England’s top-level on a consistent basis. Both Abraham and Pukki sit amongst the top scorers in the Premier League currently, with Pukki bagging six goals already this season and as I previously mentioned, Abraham with seven.

It’s going to be exciting to see if Tammy Abraham can continue to score goals on a weekly basis for the Blues. He will have his first real test this weekend as Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge in a heavyweight clash. Frank Lampard’s side previously put up a respectable fight against the Reds in the UEFA Super Cup in August, losing in penalties.
