Tottenham will be desperate to turn their season around after International Break. Starting Lucas Moura would be a big step forward for Spurs.

It doesn’t take a football genius to understand that things need to change for Tottenham when their squad returns from International Break. Mauricio Pochettino will need to shake up his starting XI to get Spurs back on the right track. Giving more match time to Lucas Moura could go a long way towards curing what currently ails the North London club.

Lucas has played in six Premier League matches for Tottenham on the current campaign, but he’s only started twice. As it currently stands, the talented Brazilian attacker has only played 240 league minutes on the year for Spurs per Whoscored.com.

That isn’t a small amount of football, but it’s clearly not as much game time as Lucas would like. The good news for the 27-year-old is that he has a big opportunity to regain a place in Pochettino’s starting XI. The club’s dismal form as of late leaves the Argentine gaffer in desperate need of a spark.

Lucas could be just the match to ignite the Tottenham attack. He’s not a perfect player, but his willingness to run directly at the opposition can help bring much-needed energy for Tottenham in the coming weeks. Specifically, that would be a large improvement over what Christian Eriksen is currently giving the squad. There’s a credible argument to be made that the Dane should remain nailed to the club’s substitutes bench for an extended period of time.

At the very least, Lucas should get an opportunity to start against Watford in two weeks to show what he can do. The idea of starting both he and Heung-Min Son on opposite flanks is particularly intriguing. Starting two natural wide players alongside Harry Kane could open up acres of space for each member of the trio. Tottenham’s defence has been ragged in recent weeks, but scoring more goals is always a welcome sight for a club in need of victories.

Next. Tottenham may not be able to afford James Maddison. dark

The long-term remedy for Spurs won’t come until changes can be made to the squad in January, but Pochettino cannot afford to wait that long to turn things around. Giving Lucas a chance to bed in as a regular member of the starting XI is certainly worth a shot. The Brazilian live wire might be the answer to several questions currently facing Tottenham.
