Right back is arguably Tottenham’s weakest position at the moment, but Spurs fans shouldn’t expect Serge Aurier to stay in North London very long.

If Mauricio Pochettino were free to pick his starting XI based on talent alone, Serge Aurier would be one of the first names on his team sheet each week. Unfortunately for the Ivory Coast international, his mental weakness gets in the way of his ability to perform for Tottenham. That, coupled with his outspoken nature is a sure recipe for the right back to be sold very soon.

Aurier openly admits that he was looking for a move away from Spurs this summer. He was quoted in The Mirror as saying he was actively “looking for an exit” before the 2019/20 Premier League campaign began. The 26-year-old is adamant that regular playing time will be required if he’s going to stay an integral part of his country’s squad.

The plain truth is that Aurier is too much of a loose cannon to hold a consistent place in Pochettino’s squad. Tottenham officials knew they were taking a risk on his character before purchasing him from PSG. What club officials underestimated was just how poor his judgment can be on the pitch.

Aurier has an uncanny ability to turn a comfortable win into a complete nightmare for his teammates. His penchant to get sent off for brain-dead decisions makes him a poor choice to play against any sort of quality opposition. It’s true that Aurier can put in a brilliant match against some of the most talented sides in the world. The problem is that he also is a good bet to get sent off against a club Tottenham should defeat comfortably.

It’s clear that Pochettino has lost all faith in Aurier to solve his issues at right back. It’s expected that Juan Foyth will take over the position when he returns from International Break. The young Argentine is a more natural centre back, but is a regular starter at fullback for his country. An injury sustained late in the preseason has prevented Foyth from playing a major role for Spurs to date.

dark. Next. Tottenham should rush to sell Eriksen

Tottenham fans should expect to see Aurier marginalized if at all possible. The best case scenario for the club would be to sell Aurier in one of the next two transfer windows for something approaching the £25 million they paid PSG for his services. Aurier is not a player Pochettino, or any Tottenham manager can trust. His days with the North London club are clearly numbered.
