With the banality of international football this week, there’s no better time to distract oneself from the mundane football and cast one’s mind back to transfer windows of the past.

Liverpool’s transfer dealings under Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards have been impeccable thus far.

Under the pair, Liverpool have brought some mercurial talent to Anfield such as Virgin Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker.

They have sold players at the right time too and managed to bring in great margins of profit for fringe players like Dominic Solanke, Jordan Ibe and Danny Ings.

With Edward’s great knack to demand what at times feels like extortionate prices for Liverpool’s players, fans have had little to complain about, however, it wasn’t always the case. Here are five former Liverpool players, the club sold too soon without giving them a proper chance:

1. Peter Gulacsi

Club: RB Liepzig

Position: Goalkeeper

The Hungarian has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga in the past couple of seasons.

Many will be unfamiliar with his time at Liverpool, but Gulacsi spent six years with the club in which he never managed to make a first-team appearance. He had some unsuccessful spells on loan at Hereford, Tranmere and Hull City and apart from a couple of appearances for the club’s first team in pre-season, Gulacsi never looked like he would be given a chance.

He departed the club in 2013 on a free for Red Bull Salzburg where he impressed in the Europa League and Austrian First division and found himself snapped up by RB Leipzig.

Gulacsi has become a stalwart in between the sticks at Leipzig and in 2018/19 he endured his best season to date in the Bundesliga conceding the fewest number of goals in the entire league and keeping the most clean-sheets.

Up until Alisson’s arrival in the summer of 2018, Liverpool often struggled with finding a reliable goalkeeper to guard the net with Mignolet, Karius and Bogdan all suffering some embarrassing howlers in front of the Anfield faithful. If only they had kept Gulacsi in the summer of 2013 everything could have been so much different and the club would have saved a considerable amount of money in the process too.
