Juventus player ratings vs Lokomotiv Moscow: Paulo Dybala rescues Juventus from embarrassment
By John Vaccaro
CAM: Rodrigo Bentancur 6/10
Rodrigo Bentancur was an odd choice for this position. With Federico Benrardeschi available I’m really not sure why Bentancur got the start. It didn’t really work and the attack suffered because of it. He would have been fine in Khedira’s role, but this was just the wrong spot to play Bentancur. It just didn’t work and I hope he gets back to a more natural position in his next start.
ST: Cristiano Ronaldo 6/10
Cristiano Ronaldo was fantastic on Saturday. That wasn’t quite the case on Tuesday. Ronaldo wasn’t particularly effective and failed to create anything of note for himself or his teammates. It was a pretty big disappointment given his history in the Champions League. He also once again wasted quite a few free kick opportunities, kicking them straight into the wall as has become a habit for him at Juventus. Luckily, Juventus was able to get the win anyway, but he’ll need to be better for the return leg in Moscow if Juve is going to take all 3 points in that match.
ST: Paulo Dybala 9.5/10
Juventus was headed toward disaster until Paulo Dybala delivered a moment of brilliance. With Juve down 1-0 late in the match, Lokomotiv made the mistake of giving Dybala space around the edge of the box and he made them pay. His curling effort was absolutely perfect and beat Lokomotiv’s keeper at the far post. Then, he pounced on a rebound from Alex Sandro’s shot to give Juve the match’s winning goal. It was another incredible performance from Dybala that showed just how much of an anomaly last season was. He has made it so Juventus will need to stay in the 4-3-1-2 to make sure they continue to get this level of play out of Dybala.
