Juventus player ratings vs Genoa: Juve gifted 3 points by Genoa
By John Vaccaro
CM: Blaise Matuidi 5.5/10
As has been the case for most of this season, Blaise Matuidi just wasn’t able to give Juve what they need. They don’t really need a stopper in the midfield when they play against these teams from the bottom of the table. They need players who can break down a compact defense. That isn’t Matuidi. Things picked up for the attack once he was taken out and leaving him out of the starting lineup should be something Juve considers against this type of team. There is still a place for Matuidi in the lineup when Juve is playing top teams and they need somebody in the midfield to slow down the opposing attack. Unfortunately, thats’ really the only time Juve should be starting him.
CM: Rodrigo Bentancur 7.5/10
We’ve seen a pretty clear pattern for what happens when Rodrigo Bentancur replaces Miralem Pjanic in the starting lineup. It’s not good. Juve once again struggled to create real chances in the match and was extremely lucky to get 2 goals. The first goal was partially a result of a nice corner kick taken by Bentancur, but it was mostly because Genoa’s keeper made a poor decision for how to defend the corner. Bentancur also played well defensively, but that wasn’t really what Juve needed from him. It wasn’t the best day for Bentancur, but it was good enough that he’ll continue to be trusted by Sarri.
CM: Sami Khedira 3/10
Sami Khedira continues to be the worst thing about Juventus right now. He really just doesn’t serve any purpose on the field and Juve got better the instant he was subbed off. The only positive to come from this match is that we were given hope this nightmare may be nearing its end. When Sarri subbed Douglas Costa in for Federico Bernardeschi, it opened up the possibility that Aaron Ramsey could be moved back into the midfield now that Costa is healthy. I hope that is the path Sarri takes because Sami Khedira is just an abysmal inclusion in the starting lineup.
