Juventus player ratings vs Lokomotiv Moscow: Douglas Costa sends Juve to knockout stages
By John Vaccaro
LB: Alex Sandro 7/10
Alex Sandro was clearly the better of Juve’s 2 full backs in this match. While Lokomotiv regularly attacked down Danilo’s side of the field, Sandro had his side pretty much locked down. He was also able to get himself involved in the attack and stretch the Lokomotiv defense a bit. If we see this Sandro for the rest of the year, then it will make Juve a much tougher team to beat.
CB: Daniele Rugani 6/10
I would really love an explanation as to why Daniele Rugani is being chosen over Merih Demiral when Juve needs a replacement for Matthijs de Ligt. Demiral was better at Sassuolo last year than Rugani has ever been and he has a lot more to offer Juve in the future. In this match, Rugani was alright for the most part, but was one of the players responsible for Lokomotiv’s goal. I really hope that Demiral gets his chance soon because Juve will need a lot better than “alright” to compete against Europe’s best.
CB: Leonardo Bonucci 7/10
Douglas Costa is going to get most of the praise coming out of this match, but Juve’s win wouldn’t have been possible without Leonardo Bonucci. It was his goal line clearance that kept Juve from falling behind in the second half at a time where Lokomotiv looked like the more likely team to actually win the match. He was partly responsible for the goal Juve allowed, but there was a lot of blame to go around on that one and he more than made up for it with his kick save. This was another strong match for Bonucci and he should have fans very excited for what this defense will look like when he is reunited with Giorgio Chiellini.
RB: Danilo 5.5/10
I thought before this match that Juan Cuadrado should start at right back and Danilo’s performance didn’t really do anything to change that. Lokomotiv found quite a bit of success attacking down his side of the field and he left entirely too much space open on his wing for the cross that set up the Lokomotiv goal. He also wasn’t all that helpful in the attacking end. This was another disappointment from Danilo and at this point I’m convinced that Cuadrado should be Juve’s first-choice right back.
