The French striker could part ways with Real Madrid after a decade of service…

Real Madrid unveiled the signing of Karim Benzema in 2009. He arrived from the French club Olympique Lyonnais and had plenty of expectation on his shoulders. He had really started to develop into an exceptional player and Los Blancos wanted to get their hands on that.

It took Benzema some time to truly make his mark on the starting XI since he was outshone by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in the same window. It also didn’t help that Gonzalo Higuain was favoured by manager Manuel Pellegrini. Doubts started to loom over the new signing as he failed to adjust to life at the Santiago Bernabeu after a few months.

However, now it is a different story. Benzema has been the lead striker for Los Blancos throughout many consecutive seasons and he is still scoring goals for fun. In fact, even in his “deteriorating season”, the Frenchman has scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances. In fact, he is making Luka Jovic seem like a pointless signing. However, his time could soon come to an end.

More from Real Madrid

According to SportsMole, Lyon sporting director Juninho Pernambucano is keen to bring Karim Benzema back to Lyon. The 31-year-old spent five fruitful years in the first team, making a total of 112 league appearances.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Real Madrid will be on the lookout for strikers that can come in and replace Benzema. They have plenty of options, with former manager Jose Mourinho even having a say on who he thinks should replace him.

Luka Jovic will be given plenty of opportunities to prove himself in the coming months but fans are becoming less excited by his arrival as the weeks progress. He scored in Real Madrid’s 5-0 win against Leganes at the end of October so he’ll need to use that confidence if he is to become the option for the future.

It will be tough for Real Madrid fans to say goodbye to Karim Benzema since he’s been one of the best strikers in the world over the last decade. However, if they must bid farewell then attention will soon switch to Florentino Perez and company in the hunt for a worthy replacement.
