Real Madrid have to soon starting looking at players that they could use as a replacement to their ageing midfielder Luka Modric.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric will eventually be phased out of the first team now that he is 33 years old. The Croatian superstar has been fantastic for the Whites since checking into the club in 2012, but he did drop in quality in 2018/19. While Modric has picked up pace in this campaign, it is difficult to think that he can play like he did during his peak.
Modric was an indispensable player under Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez and Zinedine Zidane as well as the other managers he played under and that talks a lot about his quality. The defending Golden Ball winner’s importance in the squad is only known when he is withdrawn from it, so Real Madrid will need to deploy someone equally important to fill-in for him.
We look at five likely replacements for the Ballon d’Or winner:
Federico Valverde has had abundant chances this season under Zinedine Zidane and he has established himself as a major candidate to succeed Luka Modric. Whenever in the eleven, Valverde occupies Modric’s role and does a fantastic job. He offers as much to the defence as he does to the attack and that is a very crucial quality of his.
The Uruguay international’s reading of the game at just 21 is beautiful, as are his interceptions, passes and through balls. For Valverde it is only upwards from hereon and with consistent performances, he could aid his club as a free replacement to an arguably priceless Luka Modric.
