3 Tottenham players will benefit massively from Jose Mourinho’s arrival
Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Tottenham isn’t good news for every Spurs player, but it will be a huge boost for several key members of the squad.
The transition from Mauricio Pochettino to Jose Mourinho will not go smoothly for every player at Tottenham. In fact, many Spurs stars will feel an immense amount of stress over the seismic shift. There are, however, some players who will benefit greatly from “The Special One” being installed as Tottenham’s latest manager.
For all of Mourinho’s talk about adopting a new philosophy during his time away from the touch-line, Spurs fans can safely expect a much more conservative setup as soon as this weekend’s match against West Ham. The formation for Tottenham may not change, but the personnel certainly will.
The following three players have the most to gain from the Portuguese manager’s arrival. Each will benefit for different reasons, but Mourinho will give the trio a significant boost.
3. Christian Eriksen
Eriksen’s boost will come in the form of leaving Tottenham in January. He, more than any other player in the squad, should shoulder the blame for Pochettino’s sacking. Early reports are that Mourinho will try to convince him to stay, but look for him to quickly sour on the Dane’s lack of commitment and jettison him in January.
It’s not impossible that Eriksen could thrive under Mourinho’s tactical setup, but it’s unlikely he’ll stick around North London long enough to find out. Truthfully, it’s time for Spurs to get rid of their former talisman.
2. Harry Kane
Kane will be emotionally upset by losing Pochettino, but he’s the ideal striker to lead the line for Mourinho. It’s not as if the Englishman has played poorly this season, but he’s not firing on all cylinders either.
Look for him to reestablish himself as a classic No. 9 under Mourinho. More scoring chances will equal more goals for Kane as long as he plays with his usual amount of effort and passion. Look for him to be publicly lauded as a key part of Mourinho’s future plans at Tottenham.
1. Eric Dier
Mourinho has long been an admirer of Dier’s game and now he’ll get his first opportunity to manage him. The physical defender was well on the fringes of Pochettino’s squad, but he’ll get a new lease on life at Tottenham now.
Expect Dier to be installed as Mourinho’s version of Nemanja Matic at Spurs. He’s never going to be terribly dynamic, but he is capable of shielding the back four with his physical play. Dier, more than any other Tottenham player, stands to benefit from The Special One’s arrival.
