Barcelona want to replace Luis Suarez with Arsenal’s golden boot winner

Barcelona seem to have a thing for Arsenal captains…

From Thierry Henry to Thomas Vermaelen, I could name a few examples of when Barcelona coveted Arsenal captains. And who can blame them? The Gunners have showcased some world-class players in the past.

However, in recent seasons, this seems to have gone out of the window. The Arsenal aren’t quite as desirable as they once were and similarly, they have not been home to any sort of leader in about a decade.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was recently given captaincy responsibilities after Granit Xhaka was seen to disrespect the club. His reaction to being substituted off against Crystal Palace persuaded Unai Emery he was not the man for the role. Aubameyang is a questionable captain given the problems he’s caused at former clubs but nobody can deny his talent.

The Gabon international was last season’s golden boot winner and he is a front-runner to repeat the award this season. He has scored eight Premier League goals in 13 appearances. He got off to an excellent start but recently, he has not been a worthy source of goals. Still, it’s only a matter of time before he starts scoring braces in every match again.

According to Sky Sports, Barcelona would like to cash in on Aubameyang. They have compiled a long shortlist, much to Arsenal fans’ delight, with their striker being just one of many. Still, as an Arsenal fan, I wouldn’t put it past the Catalans to sign Aubameyang at this point.

Luis Suarez is ageing and Barcelona are wary of that. However, this surely wouldn’t be the reason why they have turned to Aubameyang because he too isn’t young.

Aubameyang would grant Barcelona a new dynamic to their play. He is a striker that relies on his speed and ability to get in behind the defence, much like Henry. He would lavish the lifestyle of playing alongside Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann and this could make for a truly frightening Barcelona attack.
