Pique has been a stalwart for Barcelona for the last decade and it seems the Catalans have at last found his ideal replacement.

‘A king cannot reign forever.’ Is a popular adage coined during medieval times and it bodes well in the world of football too which is just as interminably changing as kings were during the medieval era. Players and coaches come and go in a perpetual never-ending incessant cycle especially at a club like Barcelona.

It is very rare that a player remains at a club for over a decade. But for Gerard Pique and Barcelona this has been the case. The Catalan centre-back has been one of the longest-serving players at the club and a true legend.

Pique has been invincible at the back for the Catalans with his timely interceptions and formidable tackling ability. His composure on the ball and cool and calm at the back has been an indispensable asset as well as his bold ability to go forward and often contribute in the attack when the Catalans were desperate for a goal.

Yet there must come a time when the king has to bid his farewell and Pique at the age of 32 seems to be on the brink of exactly just that. The towering centre back’s legs are just not as what they used to be and his pace is dwindling with the herald of every new season.

The Catalans therefore are in search of a new man to take the throne and it seems they have found a young potential suitor to replace Pique. According to AS, Barcelona are looking at the possibility of signing 22-year-old Serbian international Nikola Milenkovic to add to their defensive options.

Milenkovic certainly demonstrates similar traits to that of Pique. He too is a towering figure a only a centimetre taller than Pique himself. Milenkovic is also cool and well composed on the ball able to effectively bring it out from the defence.

His marking and tackling is just as fearsome as Pique in his prime and hailing from Eastern Europe he has the toughness necessary to make attackers quake in their boots.

Milenkovic has been a standout performer at Fiorentina since he made his move to Italy as a 20 year old in 2017  having already made 63 appearances in Serie A and scored 6 goals and he would without a shadow of a doubt be the perfect candidate to replace Pique at the Nou Camp.
