Barcelona have found their man…

Three things are definite in this lifetime: Death, taxes and Julian Weigl being linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund. Well, that inevitability has proven true once again as the German midfielder is yet again making the headlines, this time with Barcelona.

The Daily Mail has reported Barcelona are weighing up a move for Julian Weigl as soon as this January. It’s thought that the move could cost the Catalans around £21m, a price they are willing to pay.

If Barcelona are able to offload Ivan Rakitic this summer, who is thought to be wanted by several European clubs, then this would fund their move for Weigl. He ages at 24, seven years younger than Rakitic, and has experience playing at the top level.

More from FC Barcelona

Weigl is a defensive midfielder that prides himself on his defensive abilities. He also acts as the main dictator of play. This is a little different to Rakitic, who is more attacking than he is defensive, but it’s a change Barcelona would be open to.

Rakitic has made just two league starts this campaign and it’s due to the arrival of Frenkie De Jong in the summer. Rakitic will feel like this stage in his career is pivotal in terms of game time, since he will soon be nearing the end of his reign. That said, a move to a club like Manchester United would benefit all parties involved.

Rakitic is set for a for what could be his last tournament with his nation, Croatia, at this summer’s European championships. Following the success of their 2018 World Cup campaign, Rakitic will want to be right at the forefront again and for that, he will need to be on top of his game. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him push for a move away.

The good news for Barcelona fans is that they are prepared for his departure. Julian Weigl still has plenty to learn about the game and at a young age, he is malleable to Barcelona’s system. He could be a worthy investment for the Catalans at such a low price.
