Chelsea striker set for showdown talks with club chiefs over a potential exit
Is Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud on the move?…
There’s a norm in the world that when you discover or invent something new, which looks more exciting, reliable and in trend with the latest fashion, you dispose of the old. A similar trend is followed in Football. For instance, when Chelsea discovered Tammy Abraham’s bourgeoning talents, they decided to invest time in him and harness his aptitude.
Loan spells at Swansea City and Aston Villa facilitated Abraham in building confidence and better striking instincts. Chelsea are now reaping the benefits of him, with manager Frank Lampard in awe of the youngster. Lampard has gone on record to say that he is going to give Tammy Abraham as many opportunities as possible to blossom into a world-class striker.
The Blues have found something worth betting for in Tammy Abraham, meaning they now move to the painful process of disposing of the old. The old here refers to Olivier Giroud, literally and figuratively. The 33-year-old has just not been able to cut it into Frank Lampard’s plans and finds himself deep down the pecking order below Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuyai.
The French World Cup winner is unhappy and remains a forlorn figure at the Stamford Bridge. He desperately wants to play more. He left Arsenal in the first place to find better playing prospects. It seems as though Giroud will once again have to hunt for a new club that can offer him the desired minutes. The Chelsea striker has only started two Premier League games so far and played only 282 minutes for the Blues.
According to reports that emerged from Evening Standard, Olivier Giroud is set for showdown talks with Chelsea over his future as the forward eyes a January exit with first team chances remaining limited. Giroud has been frustrated and is alarmed that he might miss out a place in France’s Euro 2020 squad due to lack of match time. The 33-year-old striker is hopeful of remaining in Didier Deschamps’ ideas if he gets to play elsewhere.
There are a number of suitors for Giroud’s services. Borussia Dortmund are keen on bringing the Frenchman to Signal Iduna Park. BVB’s first choice striker, Paco Alcacer, has struggled with recurring injuries. Lucien Favre views Giroud as a classic striker who can help Alcacer relieve some pressure.
In Italy, Milan and their city rivals Inter are linked to Giroud as well. Inter already have world-class strikers in the form of burly Romelu Lukaku and mobile Lautaro Martinez who are firing on all cylinders. Antonio Conte has worked with Giroud before at Chelsea but with the presence of Lukaku, Martinez and Alexis Sanchez at Inter, it is unlikely that Conte will be able to give Giroud regular playing time.
Olivier Giroud may not be every Chelsea fan’s idea of the quintessential striker but he sure is effective at what he does. Do you think Giroud will stay at Chelsea?
