Liverpool have had their ups and downs this decade from being on the brink of relegation to European Champions, here are their best players during the era.
It has been a tumultuous decade for Liverpool Football Club. The Reds had begun the era with the sacking of Rafa Benitez and in financial ruin. Benitez’s replacement, Roy Hodgson brought about undoubtedly one of the worst period the Reds had endured under a manager. When Hodgson departed the club they were close to relegation.
Yet surely but slowly Liverpool grew into the decade. There were the highs of winning the Carling Cup in 2012, the lows of losing the FA Cup final in the same year, then failing to lift the league title under Brendan Rodgers and losing two consecutive European finals during the beginning of Klopp’s tenure. In the end however the Reds made it to the pinnacle of European football and ended the decade with a historic sixth European Cup win.
During these tumultuous times there were of course some key players for Liverpool who played a pivotal role in the club’s ups and downs throughout the decade. Here are the Reds’ top ten players for the 2010s. The list is in no particular order.
1. Steven Gerrard
The beginning of the 2010s era belonged to Steven Gerrard. The Reds and captain fantastic Gerrard hit some incredible highs during the era. Gerrard scored his Merseyside hat-trick during this decade, he almost led Liverpool to a league title win scoring 13 goals in the process and as it had become customary he came up on trumps for the Reds several times to get them out of trouble with stunning long range strikes and free-kick goals throughout the era.
Gerrard of course left the Reds bitterly with the slip against Chelsea and his final game ending in a 6-1 defeat to Stoke, but he had been such a vital player for the club and a true legend. He will forever be remembered as one of the best players to play for the club and Liverpool’s very own.
