Coutinho shines in Bayern Munich win
Philippe Coutinho starting to come good for Bayern Munich.
Things have not gone smoothly for Philippe Coutinho since arriving to Bayern Munich on a season-long loan from Barcelona.
Following the departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, Coutinho was supposed to serve as somewhat of a replacement and as a name that would excite the Bayern supporters. For his part, Coutinho needed clean slate after failing to impress with the Spanish giants.
But the Brazilian has been in and out of the side playing well in some games and faltering in other. However, against Werder Bremen, he delivered his best performance since joining the Bavarian side.
Down 1-0, Bayern equalized through Philippe Coutinho before taking the lead through to Robert Lewandowski thanks to an assist from Coutinho. It was a masterclass from Coutinho who showed flashes of the player people saw during his time with Liverpool.
"“I think everyone in the stadium enjoyed his performance,” said Flick. “It made me especially happy that the whole team celebrated together with him and shared his happiness from the heart.”Source: Goal"
Not only was his manager full of praise but so was his teammate, Robert Lowandowski.
"“That was his game today, with the ball, with the movement,” said Lewandowski. “How he did it was outstanding. We need such a player. I am very pleased that he showed how good he is and what great potential he has.Source: Goal"
For Bayern Munich, this type of performance from Coutinho is a welcome sign. In their Champions League game against Tottenham, he netted a goal. Following that up with three goals and two assists must feel good for both the club and the player.
Coutinho was very modest postgame simply saying that he always tries to do his best and that it was important that the team picked up the three points.
After some words by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the club biding their time before deciding whether or not to make the loan deal permanent, Coutinho’s display to not only bring Bayern back but completely roll past Bremen will only help his case of staying at the club.
Back-to-back strong performances are good but Coutinho will need to be more consistent going forward. Not every game will be a masterclass but having a positive influence on a match is what’s expected of him. The last week was a step in the right direction.
