Tottenham don’t see Serge Aurier as the starting right back of the club’s future. Nathan Ferguson could fill that role for Spurs in January.

No one seems to know for sure how much money Jose Mourinho will be given to strengthen his Tottenham squad in January. The safe assumption is that Spurs will be forced to hunt for some serious bargains. Pinching Nathan Ferguson away from West Brom could certainly turn out to be a terrific transfer gamble.

According to Teamtalk, Tottenham, Inter Milan and a host of other European powers are interested in the 19-year-old right back. West Brom certainly don’t want to lose him, but his contract at the Hawthorns ends after the current campaign. As such, the club may be forced to sell him in January if they want to receive a sizable transfer fee for his services.

Spurs supporters should be advised that Ferguson is not ready to step in and replace Serge Aurier immediately. In fact, he’s still well behind Kyle Walker-Peters in terms of readiness to compete in England’s top flight. On the other hand, he does have the potential to become the best player of the trio by a wide margin in reasonably short order.

Buying him in January for a discounted price would give Spurs the opportunity to bed him immediately into their youth setup. That would give him a chance to grow accustomed to Mourinho’s tactics and coaching style before ascending to the senior squad when the 2020/21 campaign begins.

That might seem like an ambitious schedule for a player with one Championship appearance to his name this season, but he’s clearly a bright talent. There’s a reason he’s recently burst onto the scene of England’s youth setup. He has an intriguing combination of athleticism and skill with the ball at his feet. Ferguson has all the makings of a quality Premier League starter if he continues to progress at his current pace.

This is precisely the sort of signing Spurs fans should be looking to see made in January. The chances of Mourinho being handed a massive war chest to remake the squad this winter are quite small. Instead, look for the Portuguese manager to work to tweak his options for the future with some relatively minor investments. Buying Ferguson would be just such a move for Tottenham.
