Tottenham fans don’t want to see Christian Eriksen sold to a Premier League rival, but that won’t stop Daniel Levy from accepting the highest bid.

At this juncture, it’s quite clear that Christian Eriksen has no intention of continuing his career at Tottenham. The only question worth asking from the Spurs perspective is whether or not the talented Dane will be on the move in January.

If you’re inclined to listen to Daniel Levy’s most recent comments in The Evening Standard, a move next month is becoming increasingly likely. The tough-nosed chairman insists that Tottenham will not be afraid to sell Eriksen to a Premier League rival.

Those words should embolden Ed Woodward and the rest of the transfer officials at Manchester United. The Red Devils have been keeping tabs on Eriksen for the better part of the last 12 months. It’s believed that officials at Old Trafford see the Danish midfielder as an ideal partner for Paul Pogba in the middle of the club’s starting XI.

Of course, Levy isn’t a chairman who will let Eriksen go for a paltry transfer fee. If Manchester United want to clinch a deal in January they’ll have to part with a minimum of £20 million. That might seem like an exorbitant fee for a player who will be out of contract in the summer, but Spurs are not opposed to the idea of letting him go for free if they can’t receive suitable terms.

From Jose Mourinho’s perspective, the quicker the club can move on from Eriksen the better. He’s kept him on the bench for the majority of his time in North London due to his concerns about the player’s level of commitment to the club. In essence, Eriksen is just an expensive substitute for Spurs at the moment.

Selling him in January could go a long way towards helping Tottenham bring back a player who will contribute to their future. Spurs are actively scouting potential backups for Harry Kane at striker as well as defensive backs who might ultimately replace the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Tottenham won’t spend a huge amount of money this winter, but Mourinho would like to make a few subtle moves to strengthen his team’s chances at finishing in the top four.

Next. Tottenham want to raid the Championship for right back. dark

In the end, look for Eriksen to be sold in January to the highest bidder. If that happens to be Manchester United, Spurs will deal with the consequences. His time in North London is quickly coming to an end.
